What about T.A.N.G.O. in architecture?
Task, Antihero, Negotiation, Guess and Optimism in South American architecture

In the 20th century the Americas and the Río de la Plata (River Plate) region were a true laboratory of European architecture. Le Corbusier ’s trips and then the political asylum of the modern masters coincided with an excellent economic situation of the region. The combination of these elements contributed to the strength of such an unusual laboratory.

This is no longer the case. Nowadays, a new architecture is born beyond buildings.

TASK

At present, the attitude regarding work is understood as an essential practice which must includes fun, learning and socialization. There is no heroic resistance and there is not futile theory either. Strategies are developed and they tend to the conscious alteration of an externality not recognized as of its own. Work is never rejected, no matter its size or complexity, and no matter who the client or the context is.

ANTIHERO

Nowadays it is assumed that architecture will not change the world. At the most, if it reaches a positive interaction with its externality, it will contribute to improve the living conditions of some people.

Architecture today does not consider itself as “the one” nor the messenger of aesthetic wisdom or the messenger of “good education”. In its own way, it exposes human fallibility. It works with individuals and not above them, it seduces, not imposes, it develops not pre established strategies, adapting and modifying the action as a response to the external stimulus.

NEGOTIATION

Today architecture negotiates as an attitude for survival.

Negotiating is an act of humility, it always supposes recognizing the other part. It requires full knowledge of its own limits.

“Negotiation” is not “participation”.

Talking about “participation” reveals the arrogance of the architect who believes that he confers decision to the one who has the right to decide.

To negotiate is understanding architecture as an economical and political art. Negotiation is not business and it is far from being transaction too.

Negotiation supposes overcoming autism and futile heroism.

GUESS

Architecture today implies a deep enjoyment, an unconcealed pleasure of being what it is.

It shows clearly that the mere fact of thinking, building and altering some pre established conditions make it feel pleasure.

Gladness is a state of the soul, and therefore it is democratic and universal. It does not require opulence or abundance.

Architecture in the South stills holds a place for enjoyment.

No longer everlasting beauty.

No longer divine perfection.

No longer soothing balance.

Just enjoyment.

OPTIMISM

Optimism is its living attitude. Optimism is not positivism or ingenuous voluntarism. It is a good predisposition to know what the future will bring. It is an optimism based on minimum project decisions.
